Creased into a rugged gorge and surrounded by steep granite walls streaked with black and tan, Rainbow Falls is a great destination for those of us who like hiking down the desent. The .5-mile descent to the base of the falls is a drop over jumbled tree roots and around walls of stone, and at two different pointswhich require the use ropes that are provided. After you linger at the base for a while, you will realize that hiking back up is the only way to get back to your car. The hike is strenuous, but the bottom-up view of this 100-foot waterfall more than makes up for it.
